It's the most recent development in Islamic State's global appeal, made possible by the internet's reach. According to data collected by the United States government, it increased 119 percent between 2013 and 2014. An increasing number of foreign fighters are opting for this ISIS-run "caliphate" to abandon the struggle back home for a new life of jihad. Moreover, many who have not yet traveled abroad are increasingly drawn to this idea and motivated by its propaganda videos and other media content that they see on Facebook and YouTube. In November 2015, a French national, Ismael Omar Mostefai, was admitted to a hospital in the city of Lyon after a shooting on a crowded street on the city's historic center. He likely acted alone and has been identified as an Islamic State sympathizer. Following this attack, there were at least 13 separate investigations into potential terrorist plots from Europe to North America to Southeast Asia prompted by people who tried to connect with acts of violence inspired by ISIS. It is only proper that the world recognize how these groups seek to dominate and spread their message of hatred and violence through social media platforms – particularly Facebook – allowing them to grow exponentially amid a lack of effective regulation. In 2015, it was found that Islamic State's propaganda arm, Amaq News Agency, has reached over 2 million new Twitter users since June 2014. It is clear from this statistic that social media and how it can be used to spread ISIS propaganda and calls for violence is a growing problem in the wake of its recruitment efforts and overreaching influence online. The Internet Research Agency, a group of pro-Islamic State bloggers in Saint Petersburg, Russia, has created fake social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram in order to gain attention for their cause. They have created an Instagram account for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, with thousands of likes within three months, and a series of Facebook pages designed to create fake "likes" for the same organization. On the Internet Research Agency's website, it is clear that they are attempting to draw attention to ISIS on social media, while simultaneously trying to grow its audience. The use of social media can also be seen in how former Guantanamo Bay detainee Abu Hamza al-Masri has used Twitter to advocate radical views and recruit new members for his controversial preaching. After being banished from various countries, he found refuge in Russia where he continues to spread his message on Twitter. Along with al-Masri, ISIS has its own Twitter account that posts updates about the Syrian Civil War. In addition to posting photos of beheadings, executions, and other violent acts, many of the graphics posted by the Islamic State are designed to attract new recruits with enticing pictures of "paradise", where there is no longer any war or suffering, but rather pure happiness.  This makes it easier for young people to fall prey to their seemingly-attractive social media posts because they are focusing on this "paradise" rather than the state in which they live in now. cfa1e77820
